The epidemic at the end of 2019 came suddenly, and all kinds of protective equipment were in short supply! Protective clothing and isolation clothing resources are in short supply. This article explains the relevant standards for medical isolation gowns.
1. What is a medical disposable surgical gown?
There are currently no national and industry standards for medical disposable surgical gowns. The American standard ASTM F3352-19[1] defines medical isolation gowns as used to protect medical staff, visitors, and patients from microorganisms and Protective clothing (clothing) for transfer of body fluids.
Medical isolation surgical gowns can also be used to protect visitors in medical settings. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Isolation Prevention Guidelines, medical isolation gowns are worn to protect healthcare workers' arms and exposed body areas during surgical and patient care activities when contact with clothing, blood, body fluids, secretions, and excretions is expected.
Medical disposable surgical gowns are widely used in intensive care units (ICUs), infectious disease departments, and infectious disease hospitals in general hospitals. Currently, there are two types of medical isolation gowns used clinically: disposable and non-disposable. Disposable medical isolation gowns are relatively expensive, and using them in large quantities will cause a lot of waste. There are many problems with non-disposable medical isolation gowns: the collar, cuffs, and abdomen are easily contaminated, which reduces the use time of medical isolation gowns; the design of the cuffs, back, and bottom has flaws, which can easily contaminate the staff's work clothes; the production materials are not Waterproof, etc. Studies have shown that there are many factors that cause hospital infections. Among them, the direct contact route of infection is that medical staff and attendants transmit their own colonized pathogenic microorganisms or infectious substances to patients through contact, causing infection. Medical staff wearing medical isolation gowns can effectively prevent and control the occurrence of hospital infections.
